Hi Ian

The restoration is going OK, just slow at moment. Getting all the suspension parts together. It came to me with gravel mag rear arms, I am about to make a set of Rouse style steel arms. I just bought of a guy here in Aus a welding jig for the steel arms reported to come from Colin Bonds Caltex Sierra team. I,m also making new beam as the one that came with the car had big cut outs in the tube to allow more suspension travel.

I will get some more pics over the next week.

Oh and I think they are more likely slow boat miles than air miles!!!!

Your DJR2 project looks great, as an Aussie, a bit jealous!

Cheers

Hi Carl

Looks like you are getting on well with the car. When do you think you will have it finished ?

I have been thinking lately which makes my head hurt ..... How good would it be if we could organise bringing our RS 500 from the UK to Bathurst  .............. I bet there's a few people in the UK that would like to do that.I know that Ian G would definitely be up for that ..... Well I think he would ?

Carl do you think that is something they would like to see before the main race at Bathurst ?? Next year !!

Say if we had 10 to 15 in all RS500s from the UK and the rest of the world And you boys must have some cars still down there ?

Maybe you all think I am mad ! But I do think that myself sometimes who would be up for that ?

Cheers Jim

Just think of the holiday we could have as well..........

Jim the aussies led the way with bringing the old girls out of retirement, they have been racing them regularly for a few years again now, a number of UK cars went down under as a result inc the Labatts car which is now back here again. I think there are at least 10 original RS500s being used or under restoration at the moment in Aus

There was talk of them heading this way as well for a season. Chap called Doctor Bob had a few and was keen to do a DJR ala the 1988 Tourist Trophy

Carl I would say those are the original arms used in the cars BTCC days as they look to have been modified from rally spec to suit the extended RS500 beam angle.

Have some pics of standard 909 rally mag arms somewhere, will dig them out and post them up for you.

Hi Paul B

Yes I would love to try and sort this out and all you boys with the road cars could come along as well !

We could have an absolutely fantastic time.....Trip of a lifetime watching RS500 Pounding around Bathurst !!

And we can watch the V8 Race after as well.....

It doesn't get much better than that..... Paul let's see what feedback we get and see who might want to go ?

Cheers Jim

If so can you please start it and we can add on their.

Cheers Jim

These are 4x4 ones but the rear stayed the same apart from diff size, the track just got wider as they went over to escorts

The rear tie bars on yours are the RS500 spec tube ones as well rather than the rally version.

some more, the square beam was used alter in the 80s on the rally cars and I believe the green and black arms are the wide track versions

I would be happy to start one for you Jim.

I think the reality would be though that cost, and the time off needed would be an issue for most people at the moment.

Year on year as the grids increase then enough owners with the financial means and free time could make it a realistic option. The Silverstone classic seems to be the focal point for race 500s now and a number of the owners are not on here yet, so thats probably the time to get everyone together and thrash it out.

The good thing is that race season ever there is winter here when the cars are tucked away normally.

I guess unless you ask you never know. :)

I sent a cosworth over to Aus a good few years ago by sea, it was around £1200 one way and sent a BMW 3 series last year in a dedicated container and it was more like 2k all in.

You can get special clearance for race cars so dont have to pay duties so long as they leave again within a certain time, so probably £5k round trip for shipping and 6 weeks either way plus the time over there. Then you have the costs of internal transport/storage etc etc

I dread to think what air freight would be.

Hi Jim and all,

Bathurst is the greatest saloon car race there is, trust me, I have done it twice, turning into Caltex chase at over 160mph keeps you focused, my sierra was the reason I went there in the first place back in '98 to drive a Holden Commodore and then in an ex-Cleland cavalier in '99.

Keep me informed.

Hi Paul S

Ok I do understand what you are saying the cost of it would be very expensive I have a lot of frends down there that own very big car dealerships so storage would not be a problem or workshops space.

It would be just the cost of getting the cars there and back is the big problem !

But I would just like to know if any one else would be up for it and would the organisers down there be interested....

If people were thinking of going they would have to have an international race license as well......

If the was a chance of it happening at all I could put my team manager that sorts all the logistics out for are other race cars out and get some sort of budget in place.........

The first thing is to see if they're are interested in OZ.

Cheers Jim

Hi Andy that must have being amazing well done to you !

Have you ever driven your car around there ? If not this may be the time .......

If we could sort somethink out down there to race the cars I think I may be able to get a good deal

on shipping or air freight as over the years we have sent are race cars all over the place ..

We just need to know who would be up for it as well......

Cheers Jim
